A Globe Air Compressor Brass Era R Model T Ford K Pre-16 Hit & Miss Wilson
This listing is for an early opposed, twin cylinder, two stage, flat belt driven air compressor. It was manufactured by the Globe Manufacturing Company of Battlecreek Michigan around 1915 or perhaps even earlier. They offered many different models of air compressors for shop use. The second to the last photo of this listing shows the inside of a folder advertising the "Auto-Portable-Compressor" that Globe offered in the 1920's. I would love to find one of those someday for display with my early car collection. Please notice the newer technology in the photo. The compressor flywheel is much smaller and stronger than the flywheel on this machine. That newer flywheel also incorporates a few blades that act as a fan to move air over the compressor to help keep it from over heating. The beautiful and ornate flywheel on this unit measures 21 in diameter. The base measures 17" deep by 30" wide not counting the semi-circular bosses for 4 base mounting bolts. I can find no cracks, breaks or any other damage on this very fragile unit anywhere. It is amazing to me that the very beautiful and fragile flywheel and base nave never been damaged since this unit is around 100 years old now. It is a miracle that the fragile cast iron finned pipe that runs across the top of this unit has not been broken and has no missing pieces of the fins. It appears that there are a missing fin or two but that is not the case. It was manufactured that way for some reason that I do not yet understand. It appears that it has been inside for most of it's life and it still turns over freely. I have not tried to run it with a motor but I can hear it breathing through the valves when it is turned over. We tipped it on it's side while loading it and some oil came out of the vent hole in the oil filler plug on the crankcase.
That is why there are some darker oil stains on the flywheel side of this unit. I have a lot of friends in the collectible car, truck, tractor, sign and toy hobbies that travel throughout the USA.
One of them may be able to safely and economically deliver this to you depending on where you live and how soon you want it. This compressor could be part of an early auto shop display in a museum or private collection. If you are interested in early shop equipment, you would do well to give some very serious thought to purchasing this very scarce early air compressor.
